Curriculum

In the Senior School, the curriculum is as broad as it possibly can be.

In Year 9, there is setting in English, Mathematics, French and Science as well as a general set for the remaining subjects including Geography and History. Setting continues in the core GCSE subjects throughout Lower and Upper 5 but it should be emphasised that by attending Freemen's the great majority of pupils achieve ten good GCSE grades whatever set they are placed in.

Year 9

Year 9 provides pupils with broad curriculum coverage which allows pupils to make informed and sensible decisions about the available options for the following year. Linked to National Curriculum guidelines, the 'core' subjects include English, Mathematics and the Sciences. The three Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) are taught separately by subject specialists in a balanced science programme which treats each subject equally. A Modern Foreign Language, French, German or Spanish, is the other main examinable compulsory element.

GCSE

During Years 10 and 11 pupils study the core subjects of English and English Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology and one of French, German or Spanish, as well as Games, Physical Education, PSHE and Religious Studies.

This will enable pupils to achieve one GCSE in a Modern Foreign Language, two GCSEs in English, one GCSE in mathematics and three GCSEs in science. In addition to these core subjects pupils also study three further option subjects for GCSE.

These choices should reflect both the pupil’s interests and aptitudes and longer-term plans with regard to Sixth Form study and future careers. Some AS and A Level courses require a specific GCSE by way of preparation.
