Independent Living Programme
Our Independent Living Programme offers Upper 6 students the opportunity to experience living independently and managing day-to-day tasks before moving away from home. They will be given the chance to gain skills which will prepare them for life after Freemen’s.
Situated at the top of Main House, the Independent Living Suite consists of four bedrooms, three bathrooms (including one accessible one) and a common area – complete with kitchen facilities and a lounge space. This means that eight students can become residents for the week, learning to adapt to life away from home before they leave the School for whatever may come next for them.
The entire experience is designed to encourage students to adapt to living independently and to proactively learn skills that will benefit them in adult life.
There will be an expectation on them to do things for themselves, from cooking and cleaning to ensuring they are ready for the school day each morning. There will always be support available, day or night, with a Boarding House tutor residing in a staff room on the same floor overnight.
There are also clear rules which will need to be followed by the students to ensure their safety and wellbeing during the week’s stay. These include respecting your fellow residents, not allowing visitors in the Independent Living Suite and following the School’s Pupil Code of Conduct and Behavioural Policies.
