Dr. Ashley Bowes

Class of 2005, Barrister at Cornerstone Barristers

After leaving Freemen’s in 2005, I read law at the University of Surrey, graduating in 2008. I remained there to complete a PhD, during which time I taught property law as an associate lecturer. I trained to be a barrister and completed my pupillage with Guildford Chambers in 2014.

At present, I am a barrister at Cornerstone Barristers in Gray’s Inn in London, specialising in planning and property law. I represent property developers, local councils and central Government in disputes about the development and use of land. I am lucky to have such a varied job which takes me all over the country, working with experts promoting or resisting development proposals, as well as being able to contribute to the development of the law through litigation in the courts.

My advice to current Freemen’s students would be to gather as many industry experiences as you can, as early as you can, before settling for a particular career.
