Economics & Business

An established and successful department with over 80 students in the Sixth Form currently studying either Economics or Business at A level.

Students’ enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity about these subjects is stimulated by a very lively and topical approach to teaching, using the current news as far as possible to illustrate the theory, so that materials are continually updated. Case studies of businesses from local start-ups to Apple and Unilever teach students to solve problems, challenge assumptions and to undertake independent research. The focus is on the important skills of decision making and planning.

Learning beyond the classroom

There is a strong focus on extra-curricular and developing an understanding beyond the classroom and the department offers a number of trips throughout the year (see co-curricular and news and events) with a big focus on the ever evolving BEST (Business and Economics Society Talks). This society is  run by the students for the students and speakers over the years have included Nigel Farage and  Christopher Grayling as well as many parents and ex pupils; Mr John Fallon (Chief Executive Pearson plc), Dr Vivek Muthi (MD and entrepreneur) and Mr Talal Shakerchi (Founder of Meditor Capitol Management).

All students have an e-textbook and are encouraged to subscribe to subjects magazines and have extensive reading lists for wider awareness.

Achieve and Inspire

Results in the department are consistently above the national average in both Business and Economics. 2019 saw another outstanding year for Economics with once again the best results ever being recorded. 23% of students achieved an A* and 83% achieved A*A very much bucking the national trend. In Business 63% achieved A*A and 100% achieved A*B grades.

Beyond the examination results students develop skill in: independent working, acquiring a critical approach to work, presentation skills and team work, essay writing skills and the confidence and ability to interpret data.

The majority of the students who study in the department go onto study an Economics or Business related course at a range of Russell Group Universities to include; Bristol, UCL, LSE, Durham, Warwick, Edinburgh, York, Manchester and Exeter. A reflection, once again of the department’s ability to not just teach to pass exams but also to inspire young people to want to enjoy and to continue to study our subject.
