I love argument; I love debate. I don’t expect anyone to just sit there and agree with me. That’s not their job.

Margaret Thatcher.

The Freemen’s Debating Society is a loud and vibrant society which attempts to challenge views and debate the most topical of issues.

Debating not only helps people learn to stand up and talk in front of an audience, but it also helps you to see issues from many angles.

The Debating Society welcomes all students whether they have debated before or not! There is both a Senior Society, for pupils in Years 9-13, and a separate Junior Society for pupils in Years 7 and 8.

Not only do pupils debate during our weekly meetings, but teams are entered for external competitions. For example, we enter the Durham Schools’ Competition, Cambridge Schools’ Competition, and ICYD (for young debaters). The House Debating Competition runs annually.

The Society is the largest of all of the school’s academic societies, and all students who wish to argue their opinions are free to come along!
