Drama

Drama Club is for pupils in Year 3.

There are lots of games played in the Autumn as pupils learn to work co-operatively, to be supportive and develop their interpersonal skills. Drama club also helps pupils gain confidence when working in a group setting.

In the Spring pupils learn more about space and movement, working in small groups and producing little plays and mimes based on different themes.

The Summer term is the most anticipated as pupils work towards the Year 3 production, and everyone has a special role to play. We invite local schools and the pupils in Years 4 and 5 to watch the performance, along with all the mums and dads. Everyone is always really proud of the Year 3 Summer Play because it shows how hard pupils have worked in drama club and how talented they are too!

Speech and Drama is for pupils in Years 5-8.

The activity encourages pupils to communicate and use their voice in public. Speaking in public is a life skill and the earlier children get used to this the more confident they will become as adults.

Pupils can take LAMDA examinations at the end of the Summer term and enter local Speech and Drama Festivals at both Sutton and Reigate where the pupils perform in front of an adjudicator and an audience of family and friends.

Several pupils took part in the Sutton Music Festival in November gaining excellent results and Jocelyn Dunne was awarded one of the Verse Speaking cups and invited to perform at the Winner’s Concert.

The Drama Department runs a new theatre writing initiative called Drama Lab. This group has recently started to develop some work on writing screen plays and making short films. This year we are running the group in concert with ‘New Views’ a playwriting initiative for 15-19 year olds at the Royal National Theatre, a programme which will allow students to meet with, and be mentored by, professional playwrights. This is certainly an exciting opportunity for our students to be involved with.
