Young Enterprise provides Year 10 pupils with an understanding of how a business operates.
Pupils form companies, decide on a product or service, come up with a company name and trade for approximately nine months. Each pupil has a role in the company, some of which are at Director level. The company is a real company, registered through Young Enterprise, with shareholders, articles of association and a bank account (with HSBC). They hold weekly board meetings with an external adviser, and trade in school and at external trade fairs and other events, such as the FSA Christmas Fair. They also participate in a number of competitions such as Dragon’s Den, throughout the year and take part in two workshops with other schools. There is an area final, held in March, for which pupils submit a company report and interim accounts, set up a trade stand and give a five minute presentation – without notes. Winners of the area final compete in a number of further rounds which culminate in the nationals at the Savoy.
Young Enterprise is a invaluable tool for teaching organisation, communication, teamwork and is generally thoroughly enjoyed by all those involved.
