100 Years in Ashtead

City of London Freemen’s School marked a historic milestone with a special flag raising ceremony last week to celebrate 100 years at Ashtead Park. Pupils, staff, alumni, and members of the local community gathered to honour the occasion and look ahead to a year of centenary celebrations.

The ceremony was rich with symbolism. Two students presented a gold key to the Headmaster, echoing the moment when the Lord Mayor first opened the School with a golden key in 1926. Inspiring words were shared by both the Headmaster and the School Chaplain on what was a sunny and historic day for the Freemen’s community.

In 1926, Freemen’s moved from its original home in Brixton to the beautiful surroundings of Ashtead Park. Since then, generations of pupils have flourished here—learning, growing, and forming lifelong memories. Now, as the School begins the 2025/26 academic year, it proudly reflects on a century of heritage at Ashtead Park while looking forward to the future it is building together.

Headmaster Roland Martin said:
“This is a remarkable moment for our community. For 100 years, Ashtead Park has been the backdrop for young people to discover their talents, forge friendships, and pursue excellence. Today we celebrate not just our past, but also the exciting future that lies ahead for Freemen’s.”

Our centenary celebrations began with this flag-raising ceremony at the beginning of term and will continue throughout the academic year and into December 2026. A wide range of events and activities are planned for pupils, parents, alumni, and the wider Freemen’s community.

We look forward to sharing this historic moment with you and hope you’ll join us in celebrating Freemen’s past, present, and future.
