Sport for All, Screens Away: Why Freemen’s Champions Active, Focused Childhoods
A recent Telegraph article highlighted what many educators already know: sport isn’t just good for children – it’s transformative. At Freemen’s, we see this every day. Sport builds resilience, confidence, and teamwork, and it’s deeply woven into our school culture.
We believe in Sport for All. That’s not just a slogan – it’s a reality. The vast majority of our pupils take part in formal fixtures, and the vast majority are physically active three or more times a week. From Year 3 to Sixth Form, our pupils enjoy a wide range of sports including rugby, netball, hockey, cricket, athletics, fencing, squash, swimming and more. Our award-winning facilities and expert coaching staff – including national-level coaches – ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.
But we also know that wellbeing isn’t just physical – it’s digital too. That’s why our Junior School is proudly smartphone-free, and from this year, that policy has rolled up into Year 7 of the Senior School. Our Senior School enforces strict policies: no phones out during the school day. More and more of our parents are choosing to delay smartphone ownership, creating a united front to protect childhood and promote focus.
At Freemen’s, we’re committed to nurturing the whole child – mind, body and spirit. Sport and screen-free learning aren’t just policies – they’re part of a bigger picture: helping children learn, lead and make a difference.
