Our Junior School – Kind, Honest, Fun, and Full of Heart! ❤️

At Freemen’s, what you see is what you get - and that’s exactly what the Good Schools Guide saw when they visited. A school that’s true to its values, where children are kind, honest, and fun, and where our shared ethos to Learn, Lead and Make a Difference shines through every corridor, classroom, and conversation.

Warm, Welcoming, and Wonderfully Alive 🌟

Our purpose-built Junior School was described as “warm and welcoming” - full of light, laughter, and learning. Children enjoy their own Art, DT, Science, and Food Tech rooms, plus a well-stocked library buzzing with activity.

From day one, pupils also use the whole school’s facilities - swimming pool 🏊, acoustic Recital Hall 🎵, and Ferndale Theatre 🎭 - helping them feel part of the wider Freemen’s community from the start.

Parents love the continuity - once you’re in, you’re in. The all-through structure ensures no stressful reapplications and a smooth, secure journey to Sixth Form.

Lessons That Feel Alive 📚

Pupils were described as “hungry for information” - hands shoot up, and there’s a real sense of curiosity and confidence. Lessons are focused but relaxed, and pupils are keen to participate.

Teachers are “kind and supportive”, making learning fun - playing games in language lessons, exploring ideas together, and creating space for curiosity.

From the start, children benefit from specialist teaching in RS, Music, DT, Food Tech, Science, Computing, Art, and PE/games - laying the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.

A Creative Community 🎨

Music 🎵

Described as “top notch”:

  • Instrument Fair lets pupils “try before they buy”
  • By Years 3–6, around three-quarters of pupils take instrumental lessons
  • Two junior choirs, orchestra, and many ensembles

Art & DT 🎨

  • Bright studio with its own kiln, giving pupils freedom to experiment and create

Drama 🎭

  • Year 6 perform Shakespeare each year

Sport and Co-Curricular Life ⚽

From the pool to the pitch, pupils are active from the start:

  • Girls: hockey, netball, cricket
  • Boys: rugby, football, cricket
  • Athletics and tennis in the summer
  • Fixtures start from the first term; girls’ football is thriving

Co-Curricular Life

  • Over 100 clubs from chess, cheerleading, magic, to Mandarin 🀄✨
  • Year 4 residentials, PGL adventures, Year 5 & 6 ski trip ⛷️
  • A thriving girls’ football club
  • Described by parents as “brilliant in variety and quality”

Living Our Values 💛

Pupils live out kind, honest, and fun every day, inspired by older role models who learn, lead, and make a difference.

Sixth Formers volunteer, run clubs, help with lunch duties, and spend breaktimes reading and playing with younger pupils.

One Year 3 pupil said: “I’m going to be one of those when I’m older.”

The Last Word 🏆

“Freemen’s fosters independent, ambitious, and future-ready learners through a fun and refreshing curriculum - and parents love the all-through aspect too.”

Pupils were described as “among the bubbliest we’ve met” - brimming with pride, laughter, and joy. They talked about everything from the “delicious katsu curry” to “meaningful assemblies” and extra maths clubs that build confidence.

And that’s exactly who we are - authentic, ambitious, and proud to make a difference.
