Last week, Freemen’s was honoured to welcome back Old Free, Ollie Bambrook (Class of 2007), who returned to the School to speak to pupils across several year groups as part of this year’s Remembrance commemorations.

Ollie, who attended Freemen’s “back in the day,” reflected fondly on his experiences as a pupil, sharing the lessons and values that have remained with him throughout his life. Since leaving Freemen’s, Ollie has built a distinguished career in the Armed Forces. He joined the Regular Army in 2011, serving as a Captain in the Yorkshire Regiment with an operational focus in Afghanistan. Following his Regular service, he continued his commitment to the military through the Army Reserves, where he now serves as a Major in the London Guards, undertaking ceremonial duties.

Passionate about the importance of Remembrance and the enduring value of service, Ollie’s talk provided pupils with a compelling perspective on leadership, resilience, and dedication. He spoke candidly about the challenges he has faced, the lessons he has learned, and how his time at Freemen’s shaped both his career and his approach to life. His reflections offered pupils an inspiring reminder of the strength that comes from community, courage, and compassion.

On Tuesday 11th November, the entire Freemen’s community gathered in front of Main House for the traditional two-minute silence, paying tribute to the soldiers who gave their lives in conflict. The atmosphere was one of quiet reflection and respect as staff and pupils stood together to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Following the service, members of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) made their way to St Giles’ Church, where they laid crosses on the graves of former Freemen’s pupils who lost their lives in the war. This moving act of remembrance served as a poignant connection between the past and present, ensuring that the courage and sacrifice of those who came before us are never forgotten.

This year’s Remembrance commemorations at Freemen’s were a powerful reminder of the importance of honouring those who have dedicated their lives to others. Through reflection, respect, and remembrance, the Freemen’s community continues to uphold the legacy of those who served and to inspire the generations to come.
